"Jungle" is the new single off the Ganglians forthcoming LP Still Living (Lefse Records) due 8/23/11. The sound is still psych-pop, but perhaps with a more refined weirdness. Still Living was recorded with Robby Moncrieff (who recorded Dirty Projectors’ Bitte Orca) at The Hanger Studios in Sacramento. Singer/guitarist Ryan Grubbs is now a resident of San Francisco, so it’s likely you’ll be hearing more from the Ganglians.
Last Saturday, Pedro and I went to Guerrero Gallery and saw Nick Waterhouse with his band the Tarots and his back-up singers the Naturelles. It was a nitty-gritty performance, in all the right ways. Last week, I also got to interview Waterhouse for the Chronicle, and found out how rhythm and Rooky Ricardo’s records inspire him. Read more here.
Waterhouse seems to be on a roll. Check him live with Ty Segall and Royal Baths at Bottom of the Hill tonight (4/21) 8:30 pm, $8. Also at 111 Minna Friday (4/22) 8 pm, $5. And also, at the Knock Out next Saturday (4/30) 10 pm, $7.
For my first piece for the Bay Citizen’s Culture Feed, I wrote about City Limits Records, a new label started by SF bloggers Peter Arko (Ears of the Beholder) and Robert Khoruy (See the Leaves). You’ll have to wait till June, but the first release from the label is a Bay Area-based compilation with tracks from so many rad bands:
Tim Presley’s White Fence just dropped some new sounds. The Harness 7” now out on Afterlife, drifts like Alex Chilton’s Like Flies on Sherbet and is totally infectious. If you didn’t know by now, White Fence has roots in our fair city as well as a SF-based house band.
Below is video I filmed of White Fence performing “The Love Between” back in January ’11.
The Mantles // Raspberry Thighs. San Francisco’s the Mantles is throwing a release party this Friday (4/8) for its 7-inch release of “Raspberry Thighs” off SDZ Records. After releasing a slew of singles, Pink Information EP on Mexican Summer, a self-titled LP on Slitbreeze, the Mantles finally unveil its European debut single. This beachy Nor-Cal track has a darker underside, as it sings about saying farewell. Check the band live this Friday at the Knockout with the Wrong Words, Lens and Wet Illustrated. 9 pm, $7.
Alexis // Lonely Sea. We’ve been waiting, and now it’s true. High Fantasy’s Alexis Blair Penney will release the much acclaimed single “Lonely Sea.” The freestyle influenced classic house track was created with the help of Nick Weiss of Teengirl Fantasy. Limited to 250 copies, the 7” vinyl will also feature a remix by J. Kendig & J. Sperber of Honey Soundsystem. Alexis’ record release will include a live performance at the Honey Sundays party, this Sunday (4/3) at Holy Cow.
