Video: Boyz IV Men // “Rocky IV”.
In May, the SF based garage-key electro trio Boyz IV Men recorded a few new songs with with sound engineer Phil Manley (Life Coach/Trans AM/The Fucking Champs/Jonas Reinhardt).  “Rocky IV” is yet to be release properly, but director Forest Haiss filmed their first proper video. Shot on a local coastal ranch, the video takes the boyz through oodles of old fashion fun: motor bikes, horses, tractors, and guns. Enjoy!

Song: PWR HUGZ // Drake “Over” (Remix).

Last May, Kitsch Gallery was blasting this song for weeks straight. It’s creator was our flatmate Josh Hill, also known as PWR HUGZ. You may recognize him as the drummer for the three-piece garage-key electro band Boyz IV Men. What you may not know is that he spends a lot of days remixing. To what purpose? To party mostly. Drake’s “Over” is a powerful track, and PWR HUGZ provides it justice in invoking its lyrical content, embracing the cathartic realization of change, and hooking you into a hyper dance track. Check out more of his track on his SoundCloud.

My friend, photographer and graphic designer Zac made us our awesome logo and with it’s completion we knew it was time to have a party. So, Friday night, Pedro and I (with a little help from our awesome friends) hosted our launch party for Night Fog Reader at El Rio.

Pamela played first and they raged hard. The lady duo—Ashley Thomas and Courtney Gray—started with double guitars and Will Ivy on the drums. Later on, Courtney beat the drums while Ashley fronted. They called up Jasper of the Myonics, who played a few songs with Pamela, including a Myonics song!

Ryan Grubbs of the Ganglians DJed between the two acts. The flavor of the set ranged between Raga disco beats by Charanjit Singh and psych cult classics like The Twinkeyz’s “Aliens In Our Midst.”

If you’ve ever seen Boyz IV Men live, then you know they get the party and the dance pit started. Needless to say, the Boyz did not disappoint. It got really sweaty and crowded as people shoved into each other. I tried to protect the projector while also taking photos. I’m pretty proud of my feeble attempt to capture a picture of the Night Fog Reader logo randomly projected onto Trevor’s crotch. After the live sets, FuZZz DJs Snaps n’ Claps took over for the rest of the evening.

A special thanks goes out to the ladies of FuZZz who made this all possible.

Also, thanks to our readers and friends for liking us and coming out to the show! It was fucking full.

We have a logo now, so we’re celebrating with a launch party.
Night Fog Reader went public in March. Since then, we’ve been lucky enough to post mixes from some of our favorite local musicians (Dominant Legs, Nick Waterhouse, Melted Toys, and Damon of Mi Ami/Jonas Reinhardt), we’ve written up some awesome local shows, posted exclusive tracks, and some local gossip/stories. The response has been surprising, and we feel super grateful! But all this time had gone by and we’ve never had a logo. Well, that’s changed (designer credit: Zachary Maricondia) and now we want to celebrate with an official launch!
We’ve asked a few of our friends to help us out. Performing live will be…
BOYZ IV MEN
The garage-key electro trio that blasts dance jams using Casio/Korg keyboards, drums and samplers – nope, no laptops in this rig. They just recorded some new material with Phil Manley (Trans AM/The Fucking Champs/Jonas Reinhardt), and are gearing up for some big things this year. Check out their latest track.
and..
PAMELA
It’ll be Pamela’s third show ever! Night Fog Reader first caught wind of Pamela when she performed with Will Ivy and California Sunshine at the Knockout a few weeks back. She’s out in New York right now and playing at Bruar Falls this Friday (5/24). Don’t worry, we know her flight will be back for this show. She’s on first, so get there early!
DJ sets by
RYAN GRUBBS
Ryan Grubbs is lead singer of the Sacto/SF psych-pop band the Ganglians. Their new album, “Still Living” is due in August via Lefse Records. They also have a music video for their new single “Jungle” – note: Ryan is not actually in the video.

FuZZz DJs Snaps n Claps
Their first Friday dance party has been one of our favorites. Check out the mix they made for us!

Last week, San Francisco’s Boyz IV Men recorded four new tracks with sound engineer Phil Manley (Trans AM/The Fucking Champs/Jonas Reinhardt). They’ve posted some unmastered goodies for us to preview. “Rocky IV” is appropriately titled; it’s definitely a workout jam. They keys hit hard and the drums gush out rhythm. What sets these tracks apart from last fall’s Sweat LP (Turn Up Records) is their finesse – it sounds like they’ve tricked out their sound ride, but the beast of an engine remains the same.

Light Asylum performs at Public Works this Wednesday (5/18) w/ Water Borders & Boyz IV Men.
Last August, Light Asylum played a stint of Bay Area shows, notably at The Eagle Tavern, Milk Bar, East Nile and the Mothertonge festival at the Brookdale Lodge (local support included Jonas Reinhardt, Boyz IV Men, Jealousy, and So Much Fun). What’s happened since? They’ve signed with Mexican Summer who will give the band’s self-released In Tension EP a proper release (June 14, 2011). They’re coming off a tour with Portland’s YACHT to glaze us in laser lights and arpeggiated keys.
Local garage-key electro trio Boyz IV Men will blast things off. Last year’s Sweat LP (Turn Up Records) got the Boyz (for short) a string of big venue shows with acts like Miami Horror, Grum, and Mr. Oizo. Now they have a bunch of new material and plan to go into the studio with Phil Manley (of Trans Am, Jonas Reinhardt, and Fucking Champs) who notably recorded the last Mi Ami EP, Dolphins. Look forward to that.
SF’s Water Borders are Amitai Heller and Loric Sih. The duo play gothed-out witch house jams. Cool thing is that they’re totally normal dudes. Last year, they recorded a track with UK-based Glasser, and this year they performed with Salem at 103 Harriet. I wasn’t there, but I heard it sounded awesome. So look forward to night of exciting local talent and some sweet Light Asylum.
At Public Works, with DJs WhITCH, NAKO, RICHIE PANIC. Advance Tickets are $7, or $10 at the door.

Video: Grum // Through The Night. Leeds-based Grum (Graeme Shepard) flows out unrestrained electronic pulses of sound blood. The synth-electro album Heartbeats made waves last summer containing a hefty collection of nostolgic dance ballads. Picture yourself driving down Highway 1 in a 1981 Camaro with no destination and an ache for forbidden urges. Grum returns to San Francisco on April 16th with the support of SF homies Boyz IV Men. The Mighty, $10, 10PM.
