Video: Dominant Legs // “Make Time For The Boy”.

Loving the coordinated dance moves.

Upcoming tour dates in support of Eleanor Friedberger:

2/3 – Los Angeles, CA @ Troubadour
2/4 – San Francisco, CA @ The Independent
2/7 – Portland, OR @ Mississippi Studios

Video: Dominant Legs // “Loving Now” (live acoustic).

This video comes via echolocale as part of their new series with the Noise Pop Podcast. Filmed upon a Grove Street rooftop, “Loving Now” (off the new LP Invitiation) brings you into San Francisco’s Indian summer with a tune about loving yourself and acting your age - perhaps for the sake of others. I’ve always been impressed by singer-guitarist Ryan Lynch’s romanticism and ability to turn out amazing pop songs. The now five-piece band is on their first national tour. If you’re not a native San Franciscan, be sure to get a taste of the California sunshine (tour dates below).

Preview // Dominant Legs’ Invitation.

The Hype Machine is now streaming Invitation, Dominant Legs’ full-length LP (via Lefse Records). On several drunk and sober occasions I’ve mentioned to singer/guitarist Ryan Lynch that DL is one of the best bands in San Francisco.

Take a listen for yourself:

Dominant Legs play their record release show on September 27th with Nurses and The She’s at Cafe Du Nord. Also check out a mix by Ryan Lynch for Night Fog Reader.

Video: Dominant Legs // “Hoop of Love”.

Dominant Legs have cast a love spell on the world. Filmed in Gilroy, California the video for “Hoop of Love” follows Ryan Lynch and Hannah Hunt as they escape to a California fantasy. Life seems simple, and the fruit is decadent. Last week, we interviewed co-director Hayden Shiebler, today she shares some of the video’s details with Night Fog Reader:

“Eugene Kotlyarenko and I directed/produced/edited the video together. I’ve been making music videos for a little while now and Eugene is a filmmaker - his sensibilities really lent to the cinematic feeling of the video. This is Dominant Legs’ debut - we wanted to introduce them visually and create something that complimented the sunny, pop-driven nature of the song. There is a subtle storyline to the video but we kept it simple - it’s a series of special moments. Their music does nod to their influences but it is also new and modern. We took a similar approach to the video as they do with their music - our interpretation of classic imagery. A big thanks to Sam Fuller (DP) and Richard Vallejos (production design+all around help).”

Also, be sure to check out the mix Ryan Lynch made for us back in April. Dominant Legs debut album, Invitation, is out 9/27 via Lefse Records.

The summer 7-inch: Melted Toys/Dominant Legs split.

Two of San Francisco’s best, two french labels, and a whole lot of buzz is going to make this record a hot commodity - oh, and there are only 300 copies! It’s out today, so be sure to get your hands on it. The songs are catchy, and hold true to both band’s EPs. Now this release begs the question - full length LPs soon?!

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the mixes Ryan Lynch (Dominant Legs), and Steven Harkins (Melted Toys) made for Night Fog Reader.

The third annual San Francisco Popfest kicked off yesterday (3/25) at Rickshaw Stop. There’s a great line-up all weekend long with local bands, as well as some solid bands from afar. Tonight (5/26) Dominant Legs play. I’m a big fan of the band’s pop sensibilities and vocal harmonies. I just wish they’d release a full-length already! I interviewed vocalist-guitarist Ryan Lynch for the Chronicle, and learned about his great love for the San Jose Sharks and for “Cheers.” Read the full article here.

My two other fave local bands playing this weekend: the Mantles at Rickshaw Stop Friday (5/26) and the Art Museums who are performing as part of the Slumberland Records showcase on Saturday (5/27) night. I wrote a lot more about the bands for my San Francisco Bay Guardian column Lights Out, which you can read here.

Ryan Lynch from Dominant Legs made us a mix.

Ryan Lynch is the songwriter behind the now four-piece pop act Dominant Legs. Last year’s Young At Love and Life EP (Lefse Records) channeled the afflictions of young love in a gentle sway of bright vocals and soft synths. This year, they’ve played a bunch of really great shows, and are coming up as one of our town’s finest.

2. The Cure - The 13th
3. Billy Ocean - Lucky Man
4. Color Me Badd - All 4 Love
5. Fine Young Cannibals - Tell Me What
6. Nu Shooz - Point of No Return
7. Kid Creole & The Coconuts - Dear Addy
8. Bill Callahan - Drover
9. Roxy Music - True To Life
10. Tracy Chapman - Dreaming On A World

Saturday night, we went to the luggage store to check out the art opening + music show. Here’s a “photo essay” taken on “mobile devices” of the show. (I forgot to charge my real camera’s battery. Really.)

First, Dominant Legs set up as a foursome with a bit of gear adjusting and tweaking that occurred occasionally throughout the performance. Guitarist Ryan Lynch and keyboardist Hannah Hunt harmonized sweetly. The band’s sound is a mix of David Bowie circa “Sound and Vision,” Fleetwood Mac during Rumour, and lastly topped with a hint of bossa nova. They ended the show with a toughed-up “Run Like Hell for Leather.”

Christopher Owens played a guitar medley, which ended with intertwined covers of MJ’s “Heal the World” and a bit of Charlie Chaplin.

Despite sound problems, Matt Fishbeck’s Holy Shit steamed the lofted room with fog, high-end guitar flicking, and weirdo sparkling VHS projections. Believers were not disappointed by the technical issues that held back the full force that could have been. “You Made My Dreams Come True” still cast its magical haze. Lacking synth and dealing with a blown out PA speaker, Holy Shit still held its spell.
