Video: Christopher Owens // “Mr Blue” (via True Panther + Opening Ceremony).

A little over a year ago, Ryan McGinley had his opening for Life Adjustment Center at Ratio 3 Gallery. It was pouring rain, and I was heading home from the mall after buying some deodorant. A good friend texted me, and said I should head over to Ratio 3 to catch the show, he mentioned that Christopher Owens was going to do an acoustic set. I was stoked. I had never seen Owens live, and I had missed my opportunity to catch Girls live at the Knockout on NYE the year before (I had a ticket, but was too much of a lush to walk five blocks). Ratio 3 was packed to the brim. Everyone soaked, yet cheerful. I was dripping wet, but was moved by Owens’ tender nature. I had always wondered what happened to the footage of that night’s performance. Lucky for us, all the footage was edited and release via Opening Ceremony. Make sure to check out their site for additional songs - many of which appear on Father, Son, Holy Ghost (True Panther Sounds).

Video: Girls // “Honey Bunny”.

Here is the hair-raising video for “Honey Bunny” by San Francisco’s prized jewel, Girls. Co-directed by Girls’ Chet JR White, it’s set in San Francisco, features many familiar faces, places (Taqueria Guadalajara), and is sweet and heartening to say the least. They’re currently on tour with No Bunny, but I’m excited about catching them on October 9th at The Great American Music Hall when they perform with Carletta Sue Kay, and Sonny and The Sunsets (tickets here). Girls’ new LP, Father, Son, Holy Ghost is currently available via True Panther Sounds.

Hey Girls’ fans.
This San Francisco band that has caught the attention of so many hearts is set to release its 3rd record—Father, Son, Holy Ghost—on September 13th. The hype has started, but I say just listen for yourself. Girls has released a free song: Vomit.

Saturday night, we went to the luggage store to check out the art opening + music show. Here’s a “photo essay” taken on “mobile devices” of the show. (I forgot to charge my real camera’s battery. Really.)

First, Dominant Legs set up as a foursome with a bit of gear adjusting and tweaking that occurred occasionally throughout the performance. Guitarist Ryan Lynch and keyboardist Hannah Hunt harmonized sweetly. The band’s sound is a mix of David Bowie circa “Sound and Vision,” Fleetwood Mac during Rumour, and lastly topped with a hint of bossa nova. They ended the show with a toughed-up “Run Like Hell for Leather.”

Christopher Owens played a guitar medley, which ended with intertwined covers of MJ’s “Heal the World” and a bit of Charlie Chaplin.

Despite sound problems, Matt Fishbeck’s Holy Shit steamed the lofted room with fog, high-end guitar flicking, and weirdo sparkling VHS projections. Believers were not disappointed by the technical issues that held back the full force that could have been. “You Made My Dreams Come True” still cast its magical haze. Lacking synth and dealing with a blown out PA speaker, Holy Shit still held its spell.
