Nick Waterhouse // “Some Place” - filmed by Yours Truly at Different Fur Studios.
In this very cool interview, Nick Waterhouse talks about his earliest musical memories, and the feelings evoked by these experiences. There’s also a sweet reference to this awesome song.

Video: Nick Waterhouse // “I Can Only Give You Everything” (Dir. Dick Thompson).

I appreciate Nick Waterhouse's blunt honesty, and this track lays that out clearly: “I can't give you more than what I got.” A song about realistic expectations. People have said a lot of thing about Waterhouse's music, but let's boil it down: call it part of the R&B revival or “nu-soul,” the truth is that his jams are awesome. This track is off Waterhouse's latest single for “Is That Clear” (via IL Records). You can check out Nick Waterhouse & The Tarots tomorrow (10/19) at Slims (SF) w/ The Allah-Las. 8:30PM, $10/$13. Also, check out the mix Waterhouse made us back in March.

Video: Nick Waterhouse // “Say, I Wanna Know” (live). I first caught Nick Waterhouse in early January at a White Fence show with Ty Segall and Ryan Sambol (Strange Boys). I remember it was in a small, dark and smoky basement. The ceiling was damp, and the floor was slippery with booze. It was hazy, but I recall Waterhouse sounding great. These days, it’s sounding even better. Need proof? Above is footage of Waterhouse and The Tarots, ft. The Naturelles by Jenn Kubat during May 5th’s performance at Public Works.

Missed it or want more? Catch Waterhouse & The Tarots ft. The Naturelles live this Saturday the 14th. Opening is Tender Cinders, and DJs Jackie Sugarlumps & Matt B. will keep you shaking all night. The Crescent Hotel Ballroom, 9:30PM, FREE.

Live Shows // Nick Waterhouse

Last Saturday, Pedro and I went to Guerrero Gallery and saw Nick Waterhouse with his band the Tarots and his back-up singers the Naturelles. It was a nitty-gritty performance, in all the right ways. Last week, I also got to interview Waterhouse for the Chronicle, and found out how rhythm and Rooky Ricardo’s records inspire him. Read more here.

Waterhouse seems to be on a roll. Check him live with Ty Segall and Royal Baths at Bottom of the Hill tonight (4/21) 8:30 pm, $8. Also at 111 Minna Friday (4/22) 8 pm, $5. And also, at the Knock Out next Saturday (4/30) 10 pm, $7.

NICK WATERHOUSE MADE US A MIX. He did some real work too: Straight from vinyl for your gentle ears. The San Francisco R&B analog hero is one of our local favorites, and we expect big things for him in 2011. Did you know that his “Some Place” 7 inch was recorded on the Gold Star Studios (Phil Spector/Beach Boys) master lathe? Hearing it, you wouldn’t be surprised. His mix takes us back to a world of raw AM sounds. Enjoy. download here1. Joe Bataan - Subway Joe2. Sherri Taylor - The One That Rings My Bell3. Pat Clayton - I Said No4. Nick Waterhouse & The Tarots // Some Place

The first thing I was asked when I played Nick Waterhouse & The Tarots to my friend was, “When was this put out?” Looks are deceiving, as I show my bud the 45 RPM 7 inch with no cover. Self described as a “midnight-hour R&B shake-fest,” it’s a sound that hooks, and this band is doing a very smart thing. The 7 inch released by PRES Records last fall has already sold out. A repress came out in February, and since then the R&B gang has been busy recording in LA. See the band live, and get the record this Friday, March 25th when NW & the Tarots open for The Strange Boys, Ty Segall, Cosmonauts, & Moonhearts at Club Verdi. Waterhouse & The Tarots are on at 9pm. $10, All ages.
