Song: Pamela // “Lie Down”

It’s been a bit since we put up a track, but I wanted to make the next song post a real treat. “Lie Down” is the opening track to Pamela’s debut EP PAMELA IS HUNGOVER (available now through WHOA WHOA Records). It’s Pamela’s crushing yet eloquent honesty and attitude that has me hooked. Plus, they’re really sweet so be sure to keep them on your radar. Also, read about the lessons they’ve learned from the records they love.

SOME ALBUMS WE LIKE AND SOME LESSONS WE LEARNED FROM THEM.
Pamela picks ten albums and spills life lessons in prose.

San Francisco’s Pamela are making their mark as a ‘tude driven psych mess. The band put together a list of 10 albums for Night Fog Reader, along with poetic prose articulating the wise lessons of each record.

Be sure to catch Pamela this Saturday at Afterlife with The Fucking Ocean. 8PM, and totally free. Also, Southpaw Records are putting out their first 7 inch, Pamela is Hungover in addition to WHOA WHOA Records who is putting out their cassette tape. Look out for that in August.

LESSONS BY PAMELA:

PATTI SMITH: HORSES - “brave thieved american depravities that drip honey down cave walls”

JOHN FAHEY: ALL - “spin steel strings with a withered hand and withered hand in a ritual space for lucid dreams”

THE CRAMPS: SONGS THE LORD TAUGHT US - “snarl with an americana smile in your eye”

ABNER JAY: ONE MAN BAND -  “preach slung dust-tears into medicated melancholy”

BIG STAR: SISTER LOVER - “dream the world into a corner and laugh at it from the other side of the room”

WIPERS: OVER THE EDGE - proudly suffer the alterations of our original waves

MAZZY STAR: SHE HANGS BRIGHTLY - “swim through tousled stardust, shake bones under water”

X: LOS ANGELES - “decry the sonic fortress in which you have found yourself, but don’t escape”

NEIL YOUNG: HARVEST - “shepherd through fields of creaking flannel and freedoms”

GUN CLUB: MIAMI - “strut with hot gum on bootheels of broken howls and a weighty curse”

The Fucking Ocean return to San Francisco for two shows.

I can pinpoint the moment I first heard The Fucking Ocean. I was a student at Davis and I was listening to a bunch of The Mall, Deerhoof, and Hella - you feelin’ me? I was just poking around the web for new jams via Windows XP, and I somehow stumbled upon this band’s MySpace page. It sounded loud, aggressive, bassy, and fun. It was everything I wanted to hear. Unfortunately, I missed every opportunity to see them live. Lucky for me, they’re playing two SF shows this week!

Thursday (7/14) at The Knockout w/ Street Eaters, YI & Detach Dolls, 9:30PM, $5

Saturday (7/16) at Afterlife w/ Night Fog favorite Pamela, 8PM, Free

My friend, photographer and graphic designer Zac made us our awesome logo and with it’s completion we knew it was time to have a party. So, Friday night, Pedro and I (with a little help from our awesome friends) hosted our launch party for Night Fog Reader at El Rio.

Pamela played first and they raged hard. The lady duo—Ashley Thomas and Courtney Gray—started with double guitars and Will Ivy on the drums. Later on, Courtney beat the drums while Ashley fronted. They called up Jasper of the Myonics, who played a few songs with Pamela, including a Myonics song!

Ryan Grubbs of the Ganglians DJed between the two acts. The flavor of the set ranged between Raga disco beats by Charanjit Singh and psych cult classics like The Twinkeyz’s “Aliens In Our Midst.”

If you’ve ever seen Boyz IV Men live, then you know they get the party and the dance pit started. Needless to say, the Boyz did not disappoint. It got really sweaty and crowded as people shoved into each other. I tried to protect the projector while also taking photos. I’m pretty proud of my feeble attempt to capture a picture of the Night Fog Reader logo randomly projected onto Trevor’s crotch. After the live sets, FuZZz DJs Snaps n’ Claps took over for the rest of the evening.

A special thanks goes out to the ladies of FuZZz who made this all possible.

Also, thanks to our readers and friends for liking us and coming out to the show! It was fucking full.

We have a logo now, so we’re celebrating with a launch party.

Night Fog Reader went public in March. Since then, we’ve been lucky enough to post mixes from some of our favorite local musicians (Dominant Legs, Nick Waterhouse, Melted Toys, and Damon of Mi Ami/Jonas Reinhardt), we’ve written up some awesome local shows, posted exclusive tracks, and some local gossip/stories. The response has been surprising, and we feel super grateful! But all this time had gone by and we’ve never had a logo. Well, that’s changed (designer credit: Zachary Maricondia) and now we want to celebrate with an official launch!

We’ve asked a few of our friends to help us out. Performing live will be…

BOYZ IV MEN

The garage-key electro trio that blasts dance jams using Casio/Korg keyboards, drums and samplers – nope, no laptops in this rig. They just recorded some new material with Phil Manley (Trans AM/The Fucking Champs/Jonas Reinhardt), and are gearing up for some big things this year. Check out their latest track.

and..

PAMELA

It’ll be Pamela’s third show ever! Night Fog Reader first caught wind of Pamela when she performed with Will Ivy and California Sunshine at the Knockout a few weeks back. She’s out in New York right now and playing at Bruar Falls this Friday (5/24). Don’t worry, we know her flight will be back for this show. She’s on first, so get there early!

DJ sets by

RYAN GRUBBS

Ryan Grubbs is lead singer of the Sacto/SF psych-pop band the Ganglians. Their new album, “Still Living” is due in August via Lefse Records. They also have a music video for their new single “Jungle” – note: Ryan is not actually in the video.

and..

FuZZz DJs Snaps n Claps

Their first Friday dance party has been one of our favorites. Check out the mix they made for us!
